5 Tips on Writing the Winning Essay – and – Getting It Done On Time!
If you don’t think of yourself as a writer, or if you don’t think you have enough time to devote to an essay don’t worry — I’ve outlines a few handy tips to get you started and get you on the right track.
Here’s how you can make your entry truly stand out and how to get it all done on time!
Tip # 1 Add a personal touch
This essay — no matter which topic you choose — is really about you. That’s right, we’re asking you to write about yourself — your experiences, your thoughts, your feelings.
So make it personal, write about what you know and be honest.
Remember we’re not asking you to craft the next best mystery novel, or to document how much you know about computers or networks — all we want to hear about is you.
Tell us who you are, what you’ve been through and what your thoughts reflect.
Tip # 2 Get some criticism from your friends
Before submitting your entry, have a friend or a coworker read your essay and tell you what they think. A second opinion never hurts, and your friend might suggest something you haven’t thought of.
All great writers have editors, whether it’s a friend, a coworker or your spouse — a second pair of eyes is a must!
Tip # 3 Don’t procrastinate – start today
I know what you’re thinking … "I still have two whole weeks to write my essay. That’s plenty of time!"
But before you know it the time will be up, and you will miss your chance to win all the training you need to succeed. So stop procrastinating and stop wasting time — get started on your essay today!
All you have to do is pick a topic and write a few sentences, at least get it started. Then save it on your desktop, mark it on your calendar, or add it to your "to do" list — do whatever you have to do to help you remember to finish it when you have some free time.
Tip # 4 Make it an exercise in writing
Not sure which topic to write about? Not sure if you have something to say? How about writing on all three topics!
Write the first thing that comes to your mind and don’t stop until you hit 500 words — and do this for all three questions.
Then read your three essays and choose the one you like the most. You can then take the best one and tweak it, making any final changes you feel are necessary before sending it in.
Tip # 5 Give Yourself a Chance
Even if you don’t think your writing is great and you feel that you don’t have anything important to say at least give yourself a chance. It’s not going to hurt and it might just pay off — in a nice, big way!
You never know, maybe your story will end up being the most unique and interesting one that we receive. So give it a try, what have you got to lose?
